Initial Lifeguard Training Mission, Troncones, MX
In December 2019 four days of initial training was completed for the first lifeguards to serve on the beaches of Troncones, Mexico.
FFCB Regional Representatives Jordan Pollack and Edgar Ramirez Tellez were joined by Surf Lifesaving del Sur instructors Jimmy Canale and Laine Pepper to conduct this first ever lifeguard school. Twelve participants completed two days of first response medical training, followed by two days of surf rescue skills.
Now that the first part of the project has been completed, members of this small oceanfront community in the State of Guerrero are rallying to identify needs and
solutions, as well as bringing together partners and stakeholders. FFCB representatives will continue working alongside to assist with consulting, training,
equipment and vehicle needs as the program develops. Development of a steering committee, partnership with Protection Civil, and researching best options for delivery of ambulance, rescue, and fire services are some of the key topics ahead.
FFCB and Surf Lifesaving del Sur instructors were generously hosted by community member Craig Johnson who spearheaded the initial project. Funds were raised from numerous community sponsors including area small businesses to support flights, meals, and startup lifeguard equipment (fins, rescue buoys, medical gear, whistles, etc). This is an exciting time as community members decide the next steps and the new lifeguards move into their role of professional rescuer. Thank you to all who worked hard to make this a huge success!
